Painting project

Learn how to adapt your reference material as you follow Jem Bowden step by step to paint an iconic coastal scene
The compositional sketch
The watercolour sketch

In part one of this painting project last month we examined key aspects of our main reference photo (far right) made some changes to it and arrived at a compositional sketch (right). We then made a watercolour sketch (right) to test the colour and an idea for cloud technique.

Combine soft and hard edges to create cumulous clouds

Obtain strong dark tones for impact, using tube paint

Practise quick, unfussy painting with a very minimal palette of colours

Cloud reference. Observe how the top of the cloud appears hard-edged by comparison with the bottom. The latter seems to merge softly into the blue sky.
