Hidden treasures

Build your confidence as you simplify a complicated image of a ship’s rigging while practising a variety of techniques, with Elena Parashko

Oil

Your reference photograph for this project: At sea on James Craig.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

How to simplify a complicated scene

Practise oil-painting techniques with oils or acrylics

How to paint successfully from photographs

Reference photographs are a valuable resource for artists in situations where it is just not possible to paint, such as this photo taken on board James Craig while out at sea (left). Think of a photo as a tool to assist in the creation of a painting, rather than being a slave to reproducing every detail that it records. This demonstration shows how I simplified the very complicated photo then broke down the painting process into manageable and logical steps. It’s an exercise in taking an image that appears overwhelming with detail and understanding how to simplify it and paint it, one step at a time.
