Subject matters

What inspires you to paint? David Bellamy offers insights into how he finds the best subjects and vistas to sketch and paint when travelling

What to look for when travelling

How to make the most of your painting skills

How to inject atmosphere into your sketches

Old Tende, line & wash sketch, A4 cartridge book. This line-and-wash sketch of a corner of the old town of Tende in the French Maritime Alps inspired me with its ancient rustic appeal and, while some artists are excited by state-of-the-art rubbish bins, I much prefer old bridges and dilapidated houses. I drew the pen outline first then applied the washes.

When we travel as artists we naturally tend to go to places that will excite and inspire us, and hopefully enable us to produce good work. There are a number of ways we can prepare ourselves for these trips, and here I want to give you some ideas of how I generate inspiration in a painting.
