Beachcomber

Join Rebecca de Mendonça as she paints the fi gure of a child in pastel using a variety of techniques

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

■ Draw an accurate fi gure of a child

■ Use different parts of a pastel stick to create different effects

■ Practise blending, blocking-in, cutting-in and creating highlights

Demonstration Gone Fishing

The figure is sketched in with pastel pencil, as this painting is quite small, and some precision is needed. The surface I suggest is a sandy terracotta colour – a warm colour that will be sympathetic under skin tones, and a great contrast to the blues we will be using. At this point I am thinking about what I really like about my photographic reference, which is the contrast of bright light and darker background. I also love Yasmin’s quiet contemplation.

You will need

● Winsor paper: terracotta

● Pastels: light blue, light blue-grey, dark turquoise, mid turquoise, light turquoise, cream, sandy, dark blue, dark pink, lilac and dark lilac

● Pastel pencils: mid-brown, white, dark blue and red

● Conté crayons: raw sienna and burnt sienna

About Leisure Painter

Welcome to the October issue of Leisure Painter. We have a plethora of tips and techniques, demonstrations and practical advice for watercolourists this month, from projects from photographs to how to paint contrast and drama, detail in a cat's face and flowers from life. We look at painting a figure of a child in pastel, a fox in autumn woodland in acrylics and a vignette of a church in gouache. There are beginner's guides to tonal values, painting with traditional and water-mixable oils and a look at painting with acrylic inks. We also have great pleasure in presenting the award-winning work from the Leisure Painter category of this year's TALP Open and your 16-page guide to inspirational painting holidays and courses, both in the UK and abroad. Enjoy your time painting with Leisure Painter.
