, oil on board, 12x16in. (30x40.5cm). I squeezed up against a doorway, but this was no defence against friendly Geordies who appeared out of nowhere behind me. All were friendly, showering me with positive comments. A Big Issue seller adopted me and called passers-by over to take a look and my stage fright was cured. If you can paint in a busy city street, you can paint anywhere. Thank you, Geordies! The figure on the bike was added later from a photograph taken on-site.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
■ Choose the right subjects and prepare to paint in oils
■ Be more confident when painting outdoors
Given my other profession as an actor people are often surprised to hear that I have stage fright when painting on location. My answer is always that an actor doesn’t have an audience at the read through nor are the public watching rehearsals. Indeed you don’t see an actor’s work until everything is finished and ready. It’s very different when you are drawing and underpainting – and your mistakes are there for all to see.

About Leisure Painter
Welcome to the summer issue of Leisure Painter. We've packed this issue with a variety of painting tutorials and demonstrations for landscapes, portraits, birds, nocturnes, harbour scenes, flowers and gardens. If you love painting detail in watercolour, look no further than Paul Hopkinson's portrait of a barn owl and Jarnie Godwin's beginners' guide to botanical painting. If you want to simplify the detail, look out for Paul Alcock's painting project of a busy harbour scene and Hazel Soan's watercolour portraits. From tips on work outdoors to how to paint successfully from photographs, there's something for all busy amateur painters in this month's issue. You'll find practical advice on how to use watercolour pencils and other drawing media, watercolour, acrylics and oils along with where to go and what to do throughout the summer. Enjoy your month of painting!
