Alternative Lanzarote

Beyond the beach-holiday vibe, Lanzarote is a Unesco biosphere reserve of volcanic landscapes, island vineyards, history-laced villages and a legendary local architect.

History & culture

1 FUNDACIÓN CÉSAR MANRIQUE

This gallery, just north of Arrecife, was home to celebrated Lanzarote architect César Manrique. He built his house, Taro de Tahiche, into the lava fields; its subterranean rooms are huge air bubbles left behind by flowing lava. There’s a Manrique gallery, plus minor works by Picasso and Miró (fcmanrique. org; Calle Jorge Luis Borges 16; 10am–6pm; £7).

2 MUSEO DE LA PIRATERÍA

A fascinating museum in Teguise’s imposing 16th-century Castillo de Santa Bárbara. This is the Canaries’ oldest castle, perched on Guanapay peak with sweeping views across the plains. Exhibits detail the numerous pirate attacks Lanzarote suffered during the 16th century, when Teguise was the capital (museodelapirateria.com; 9am–4pm Mon–Sat, from 10am Sun; £2.50).
