He thrilled and scandalised 1980s New York, and now – thirty years afer his death – photographer Robert Mapplethorpe is the star of a two-part exhibition at the city’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Until July it will focus on the artist’s own work, most famously his nudes. The second stage will look at his influence on the wider world of art.
