As a confirmed carnivore, the first time I took the leap of imagination needed to go meat-free was in 2007, on a lengthy assignment to India. My colleagues in Mumbai advised me to acclimatise gently by turning vegetarian for the first couple of months; edging into veganism was then easy enough, given the spectacular array of vegan snacks served in our office every day. We’ve aimed for variety of several sorts in the recommendations for vegan travel you’ll find in this issue: taking you from Bali to Berlin; from cafés to tours; and from mushroom schnitzel baguettes to beetroot ‘rawvioli’ (p80). Whether you’re already vegan or curious about the options increasingly available, I hope our feature sets your stomach rumbling. Elsewhere in this issue, we’re celebrating winter with suggestions for memorable experiences along degrees of latitude headed towards the North Pole (p64), and with a gift guide that includes some cool retro postcards in the mix (p18). I’ll grab this chance to mention what a welcome, lasting gift a subscription to Lonely Planet magazine can also be (p26), to offer my warmest thanks for your support through 2019, and to wish you a best-ever year of travels ahead.
