See Norway as Roald Dahl did

The evocative island municipality of Tjøme, in the Oslo fjords

Norway may not be the frst place that comes to mind when you think of Matilda squaring up to Miss Trunchbull or James exploring the Giant Peach, but Roald Dahl’s much-loved stories owe much to the country. Raised by Norwegian parents, he was inspired by folktales and childhood holidays spent in the Oslo fjords – an expanse of lakes, historic villages and Miss Honeystyle forest cabins near the capital. On the centenary of Dahl’s birth, follow in his footsteps on a sojourn to the area, an ideal place for laid-back summer pleasures: lazing on beaches, island-hopping by ferry, or gliding across Lake Mjøsa on the world’s oldest paddle steamer. One of Dahl’s favourite spots was Drøbak, a town of clapboard houses that looks onto 19th-century Oscarsborg Fortress, where open-air concerts and events take place all summer.
