St George’s Day marks the start of the asparagus season on these shores. Throughout May and June, the good people of the Vale of Evesham will be turning green, but not with envy: this stretch of the Worcestershire Cotswolds is recognised for the quality of its asparagus. The British Asparagus Festival is on until 21 June, with tours and fun runs, and veggie auctions at the Fleece Inn (britishasparagusfestival.org, thefleeceinn.co.uk). On 2–4 June, Asparafest (asparafest.co.uk) brings music and cooking demonstations – not just limited to all things green and pointy.
