Explore the villages of the Cotswolds

In its villages built of honey-coloured stone, the Cotswolds is awash with beautiful buildings to admire, fine places for afternoon tea and scenic countryside ambles.

Broadway, with its antique shops, tearooms and galleries, has long inspired artistic types. About three miles south is Snowshill Manor, a mansion once home to the eccentric Charles Paget Wade. It holds an extraordinary collection, ranging from musical instruments to Japanese armour (nationaltrust.org.uk; afternoons Wed–Sun Apr–Oct, see website for more opening times; £10.20).

Take the time to wander down to the lovely 12th-century Church of St Eadburgha, a sign-posted one-mile walk south from town. Near here, a path leads east and uphill for 1½ miles to Broadway Tower – a crenellated, 18th-century Gothic folly on the crest of the escarpment. There are all-encompassing views from the top: allegedly, up to 16 counties on a clear day (broadwaytower.co.uk; 10am–5pm; £4.80).
