The most westerly point on the British mainland is also one of the most beautiful, with superb views to the islands of Skye and Mull. The area is rich in wildlife, from otters and minke whales to deer and a variety of birdlife. Head to the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, built in 1849 by the ‘Lighthouse Stevensons’, family of Robert Louis, for expansive views over the ocean (


Applecross feels more like an island retreat than a village due to its isolation and the views of Raasay and the hills of Skye. Travel further down the A896 to one of the best drives for remote and rugged scenery in the country. Until the coast road was opened, the only road in to Applecross was over the Bealach na Ba, the third-highest motor road in Scotland. With hairpin bends and gradients of 20%, the views are dramatic.
