HEAVENLY RECORDINGS
The debut album from London duo David Wrench and Evangeline Ling is an oddball journey through wonky pop, squelching synths and bizarre lyrics that combine to form an esoteric, eccentric but endearing collection of songs. Occasionally, it feels more like scattered ideas collected and thrown together – experiment-like – rather than a complete album release. But this chaotic, volatile mix of hissing beats, echo-soaked vocals and synthesiser parts feels emblematic of the project itself. Of their early sessions, the pair say they never worked for more than one hour on a track. This fast-paced explosion of ideas and throwing wild sounds together to see what sticks is ultimately what makes the album such a pleasingly unpredictable listen. It ricochets between genres restlessly – the sugary pop of Hot Salt mutates into the twisted funk of Dance Your Life Away, while the bonkers Dealing With Hoarders defies categorisation altogether – a little like this album.
