Street Cred

Posted 31 August 2016   |   2967 views   |   Music   |   Comments (0) You never used to see pianos in public places but now you see them all over the place. Peter Baber finds out why and asks some of the players what they like about tinkling the ivories in public

Commuters bustling through London’s St Pancras station one cold Thursday evening in February this year might have been surprised to see a crowd forming around a piano in the concourse. They would have been even more surprised had they ventured closer and watched the short, bespectacled and very familiar musician tinkling the keys. The piano player wowing the crowd was in fact Elton John, in town to promote his new album Wonderful Crazy Night. On his way to the studio he stopped at the concourse to give a short performance on a Yamaha acoustic piano.
