WILLIAM DUNLOP 1985-2018 'HE WAS A HUGE NATURAL TALENT'
Tragedy struck the Dunlop road racing family once again when William Dunlop sustained fatal injuries during practice for the Skerries 100 on Saturday. The son of Robert Dunlop and nephew of Joey crashed his Temple Golf Club Yamaha R1 during the third lap of Open practice on the 2.92-mile Co Dublin circuit. The accident is under investigation but witnesses report that Dunlop’s R1 bottomed out in a depression at the high speed Sam’s Tunnel section, ripping the sump plug from the engine. Oil sprayed on to the rear tyre, causing Dunlop to lose control of his machine. The session was immediately red-flagged and medics rushed to the scene. Paul Jordan, who was following close behind on his Yamaha, managed to avoid the crash. Michael Dunlop, William’s younger brother, was also taking part in the practice session. He was stopped on the circuit by marshals before he reached the incident. William is survived by his partner Janine and two-year-old daughter, Ella. The couple were expecting their second child.
