Most people are familiar with the surge of feel-good emotions following a rewarding run. But while it’s easy to assume this feeling is triggered by the release of mood-boosting endorphins, scientists now believe the so-called ‘runner’s high’ could be caused by endocannabinoids: natural biochemical substances similar to cannabis. A new study found that runners felt ‘high’ even when they took medication to block the production of endorphins. The scientists concluded that endocannabinoids are therefore “better candidates than endorphins” to explain the phenomenon.
