Tith over two miles between me and a not previously visited race venue, and less than 30 minutes till race start, suddenly running to the Wiltshire 10 didn’t seem so smart. Attempting to turn the outing into a long run had seemed like a clever training idea a few days ago: an endurance run with a significant race-pace effort in the middle. (Plus, um, it doubled as a ready excuse if the race doesn’t go to plan.) Yet most of my long runs are bimbles, ambles, rambles and yomps, slowpaced, lackadaisical affairs, where I pootle along, mostly daydreaming. Like a José Mourinho team, I’ve been caught time wasting.
