Men's Running  |  Nov-15

Legendary track and field coach Bill Bowerman famously said: “There is no such thing as bad weather, just soft people.” But, then, Bill spent most of his time in the state of Oregon on the US’s sun-dappled West Coast. For those
of us in the rain-sodden UK, the prospect of another wet and windy winter sends shivers down the spine. I still vividly remember standing at the foot of Box Hill in Surrey at the start of the 2014 Knacker Cracker event, half expecting to see Noah and his ark come sailing by in the flood-like conditions.
But in many ways, Bowerman was right: bad weather’s no excuse for not running.
Unlike the common or garden hedgehog, runners don’t need to hibernate. Besides, the winter months offer some incredible running opportunities. There’s the cross-country season, for starters – a mud-splattered test of speed, strength and mental toughness that will make all other running feel like a doddle. There are umpteen obstacle course races, if you simply can’t abide the idea of going for a run without crawling through barbed wire and being electrocuted, and myriad other events that make a virtue of the cold weather.
Running through winter means running in the dark and, at risk of sounding like your mother, it pays to be safe. That’s why this issue is full of advice on where to run, what to wear and how to stay motivated this winter. If you need any added incentive, turn to page 54 for our feature on the North Pole Marathon, where temperatures regularly reach -40˚C. And you thought the UK was nippy.
