As a student nurse I gain my knowledge of theory in the classroom, but applying and seeing that theory come to life in practice can be daunting at times.
I thought I had a sufficient understanding of the clinical use of ECT, the process involved and its effectiveness in treating mentally unwell patients. Throughout my training I have come across professionals in practice, fellow students, patients and family members who have misconceptions and controversial views on ECT.
I believe that this generally stems from the historical context of the treatment being both violent and inhumane. It is still portrayed in the media as a form of torture, and the stigma continues because of a lack of knowledge and understanding.
