The most striking announcement concerned a new addition to Hornby’s range of early railway models. With the Stockton & Darlington’s 200th anniversary celebrations taking place in 2025, Hornby has risen to the challenge of replicating Locomotion No. 1, complete with fully operational valve gear.
Built in 1825 by George and Robert Stephenson, it was the world’s first steam locomotive to haul a passenger train on the newly opened Stockton & Darlington Railway. After withdrawal it was preserved for posterity and stood on a plinth at Darlington station for over 80 years, before being moved to a more suitable museum location – it currently resides at its namesake museum in Shildon.
Due to arrive in October, Hornby’s model (R30346, £169.99) will make for an impressive sight. Indeed, a 3D render was unveiled at its Margate HQ in December, along with an array of cast and moulded components.
