One of the biggest events in the calendar of many of Britain's heritage railways today is their annual Forties or wartime weekends.
We often think of the dark days of the first and second world wars as gloomy and depressing, with everything appearing in varying shades of grey.
Yet every summer, our preserved railways become a riot of living colour as thousands of re-enactors, some with military vehicles and hardware, reprising roles from soldiers to spivs, major generals to music hall entertainers.
