JONATHAN BUSHELL
Like many racing drivers in the 1950s, Alberto Ascari smoked. Some of the more curious items in a mesmerising personal collection of Ascari artefacts (see page 98) are these cartons of cigarettes. They were among the Italian driver’s possessions around the time that he crashed and died at Monza in 1955. Kool, of course, would later be associated with the CART series in the US from 1997-2002 (Team Kool Green), while Diana was the Italian brand name for Philip Morris cigarettes until 2014.
