Are you new to Ableton Live? Or are you returning to the software after taking a break from music production? Here’s a refresher course on Live, with a particular focus on the features in the latest version…

W elcome to MusicTech’s Ableton Live 10 Focus! We’re going to kick things off with a refresher course in Ableton Live for newcomers to the software or those returning to the latest version, Live 10. In putting this tutorial together we wondered what the best approach would be to lead both newcomers and version 10 owners through the software. We decided, what better way than simply to create a piece of music in the software!

In this first tutorial, then, we’ll start from scratch, go back to basics and create a tune within Live’s two main windows. On the way we’ll explore some new instruments and effects, and also look at other features that come with the software and use them to edit our piece of music. (For more depth on all the new Live 10’s features, check out some of Martin Delaney’s excellent workshops starting on p36.)

After we have created this tune in a very basic way, we will then arrange, mix and produce it in the second of these workshops starting on p11. So newcomers to Live and Live 10 should stick with this tutorial and work through it, while more experienced Live users can jump to the second one to learn more about production in Live. Simple, eh?

Before we get started we have one quick housekeeping tutorial (opposite) on setting Live 10 up with a Template Set. This is your own customised Live Set that will load up whenever you boot the software up, and it comes preloaded with all of your favourite instruments, presets, audio files, beats and effects. It’s very simple to do and saves you time in the long run as you don’t have to keep selecting your favourites whenever you start a new project.
