IRAQ
Mosul, Iraq— A young girl uses a hole smashed through a wall to exit her house just behind the front line in western Mosul on April 15. Iraqi government forces made the hole so they could advance on Islamic State positions without being exposed to sniper ire. Iraqi forces backed by the United States have driven ISIS out of much of the city, which the militant group had occupied since June 2014, but hundreds of thousands of people are still trapped in the western part of Mosul.
