IRAQ

AHMAD AL-RUBAYE/AFP/GETTY

Al-Sejar, Iraq-Iraqi pro-government forces fire an anti-tank cannon northeast of Fallujah during an assault to retake the city from the Islamic State militant group on May 25. Tens of thousands of residents remain in the city, which has been under ISIS control since January 2014, enduring shortages of food, water, medicine and power. The siege is expected to be a tough battle for the government, which is also trying to deal with unrest in the capital of Baghdad, where Shiite groups have been protesting government corruption.
