Brexit Murder

ENGLAND

PHIL NOBLE/REUTERS

Birstall, England₋ A police forensics officer examines the scene of the murder of Jo Cox, a British member of Parliament who was shot and stabbed on June 16 by a man who witnesses say shouted, “Britain first!” The killing prompted the suspension of campaigning for the June 23 referendum on whether Britain should leave the European Union, which has focused on divisive issues such as immigration. Cox was a backer of remaining in the EU. When asked his name during a court appearance, the suspect, Thomas Mair, responded “death to traitors, freedom for Britain.”
