Mogadish, Somalia—Hassan Hanafi, a former journalist who became a media officer for the Al-Qaeda–affiliated militant group Al-Shabab, is tied to a wooden post before being executed by firing squad on April 11. Hanafi, who was extradited from Kenya last year at the request of the Somali government, was convicted of ordering the deaths of six journalists. During his trial, he admitted to killing one journalist himself. More than 25 journalists have been murdered in Somalia since 2007, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
