Baton Rouge, Louisiana—Police detain a woman protesting on July 9 the shooting death of Alton Sterling. It’s been a tumultuous month for law enforcement and its many critics. Sterling’s death and the subsequent killing of another black man, Philando Castile, in Minnesota, were the latest in a series of high-profile police shootings that demonstrate the alarming frequency of law enforcement using deadly force against black suspects who pose no threat. Days later, an African-American military veteran opened fire on police in Dallas at an otherwise peaceful protest, killing five offcers.
