Swimmers on June 21 competing in the Monte Cristo Challenge, a threemile race held at the Chateau d’If, a prison and fortress on an island off the coast of Provence. Edmond Dantés, the unjustly imprisoned hero of the 1844 novel The Count of Monte Cristo, escaped from the impregnable Chateau and swam to freedom. The race has been held annually since 1999.
