DIRE STRAITS
MONEY FOR NOTHING
UMC/EMI
★★★
Sparing us 1991’s On Every Street, this 1988 compilation (back out on vinyl) draws on Dire Straits’ first five albums, showcasing their appeal without deep cuts underlining valid Springsteen comparisons. Some tracks are surplus – see Twisting By The Pool – but Romeo And Juliet repays patience and Private Investigations thrills like a gumshoe detective novel. A live Telegraph Road highlights their slick professionalism while Money For Nothing’s bombast contrasts with the understated, heartfelt Brothers In Arms.
