REPUBLICA
CHERRY RED
★★
Aside from their bubblegum hits Ready To Go and Drop Dead Gorgeous, Republica’s 1996 debut album failed at harnessing singer Saffron’s magnetic personality. Among the flat Britpop brattishness, this new 3CD reissue shows they should have ventured more seriously into the clubs. Of the 30 additional remixes, many are single filler. But Way Out West’s skittish take on Bitch and Justin Robertson’s powerful Out Of This World make the band far more adventurous – as do The Chemical Brothers, with two early examples of their mayhem.
