The Lion at Wendlebury: heart-of-England heartiness
GREAT ESCAPES
WORDS: ELLIE DONNELL
RETREAT The Lion offers good food in a rustic yet refined setting with comfy rooms across the courtyard
WHY IT’S GREAT This golden-stone 18th-century village pub in Oxfordshire has had money and care lavished on it by new owners Brakspear, but it retains the cosiness of a traditional boozer, complete with beamed ceilings, flagstone floors and a wood-burning fire. Should the weather oblige, there’s a sun-trap courtyard for drinking and dining. It’s a makes-you-feelwarm- inside kind of place where the food is as hearty as the welcome.
