WHY IT’S GREAT A moment of nostalgia: The Horn of Plenty, in Devon, was the first posh restaurant I ever went to. I was 10 years old and my family didn’t have much money so eating out was a treat to be prized, and I remember being SO impressed by three things: eating brains, cracking through the caramel on the crème brûlée and individual hand towels in the loos (the decadence!). Many years later – I won’t say how many – it was fascinating to return to this doyenne of the small hotel world. The Horn of Plenty is in an area of beauty, in a crinkle-cut fold of hills right near Dartmoor. There are crackling fires and the atmosphere is of a well-to-do friend’s country home. Three words sum it up: warm, welcoming and relaxing.
