KEY FACT
There are two types of VR headset currently available. Some headsets have good displays, but they don’t have their own CPU to control them. This means that the headset has to be connected to a PC or games console at all times. However, the use of Apple’s M1 chip could allow its headset to work on its own, without needing a Mac, iPhone or iPad.
THE RUMOURS SURROUNDING Apple’s launch of a virtual reality headset are going crazy at the moment — and, right in the middle of writing this, news broke that references to a new “realityOS” had been found hidden in the depths of the App Store.
There are now so many rumours swirling around that it’s worth pointing out that there are actually two virtual reality devices thought to be in development at Apple. The one that’s getting everyone in a complete frenzy at the moment is a proper headset — something along the lines of Facebook’s Oculus headset — that wraps right around the wearer’s head, completely covering your eyes with a pair of built–in screens. This headset is making headlines at the moment as it’s expected to launch either this year or early in 2023. And, with the launch date so near, the cloud of rumours is starting to focus on some common factors that indicate the new headset will pack some serious high–end technology.
