‘Treasure hunters’ damage masonry on ancient landmark

GEOCACHING may be starting to catch on in Oban – but the activity has had a negative impact on a Colonsay landmark.

One concerned resident wrote to The Oban Times because of what he claimed was the damage done by ‘treasure hunters’ to masonry on the north side of Dunan nan Nighean, an ancient dun on the north-east of the island.

Geocaching is the pursuit of one or more items that are hidden in a given location for enthusiasts to find with the help of GPS and coordinates which are posted on the internet. Kevin Byrne, from Colonsay, said: ‘Over the following years great damage was done to the masonry.
