‘Sugar’ saves the day in Marshall Cup penalty shoot-out victory

Marshall Cup - Quater Final Saints won 4-3 on penalties

JUST as in round three against FC Clydebank, Saints had to endure a nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out against old rivals Kings Park Rangers at Toryglen last Wednesday night before booking their place in the semi finals of the Scottish Amateur Football League Jimmy Marshall Trophy.

Remarkably of the seven who participated in the shoot-out with the Bankies, only Willie Gemmell featured in Wednesday night’s win with the big midfielder netting the decisive penalty to send Saints through to face Motherwell Thistle at Millburn Park, Alexandria which was due to be played last night (Wednesday).

Saints were without skipper Marc Maccallum, Keith Millar, Thomas McCulloch, Allan Mackay, Paul Kerr and Martin Bonar but welcomed back Dene Cassells and Brian Mackay and gave a second time around debut to recently re-signed keeper Graham Douglas.

Saints’ recent proclivity for playing well in phases but shooting themselves in the foot when seemingly in control continued under the Toryglen floodlights when, after a good opening 10 minutes, Myles McAuley was caught in possession 25 yards from his own goal by Kings striker Grant Fountain.
