TRADING Standards are warning residents to be aware of a cold-calling scam, where the caller claims to be from HMRC.
The caller states you have underpaid tax and imminent court action is threatened unless the outstanding amount is paid immediately over the phone. In some cases the caller has asked for payment to be made by money transfer or buying gift cards. A spokesperson said: ‘You should not give personal details or banking information over the phone to unverified callers. HMRC will never telephone you regarding tax.
