Much is often said about the efficacy or otherwise of so-called ‘people power’ when it comes to affecting political decision-making.

So there will be understandable delight among campaigners who have lobbied tenaciously for the restoration of services to Dail Mhor House care home at Strontian.

As we report this week, final works are currently being undertaken to make Dail Mhor House ready to reopen as a residential respite facility following the sustained campaign by the community urging NHS Highland to protect these services, which included a petition signed by almost 2,000 people.

Dail Mhor House closed last August due to an emergency plumbing issue, with all five residents being relocated, casting doubt over the care home’s future. Sunart Community Council is in no doubt that the successful outcome is down to the determination of the campaigners, a point we would endorse.

The imminent reopening is a great example of how people power can win the day and we applaud the efforts of those involved…
