Ask the public for cost-saving ideas

I am surprised that it has taken so long for the residents of Argyll and Bute, including the Oban area, to discover that a three-weekly general waste collection service is to be implemented by the council (The Oban Times, July 7).

I have known since March 16 and had a letter published in the Ileach (Islay community newspaper) on March 19. Surprisingly, none of the Ileach readers passed a comment in its next edition.

There are numerous ways Argyll and Bute councillors can save money such as switching off the street lights, apart from the main roads, from midnight until 5am.

Councillors could also greatly reduce their expenses if their meetings were held by video conferencing, which large private companies have used for years. There is no need to clean public toilets at the weekends, especially outwith the main holiday season.
