EVERY year round about Christmas, if national newspaper reporters are stuck for a subject to write about, they usually remind their readers about the four Scottish students who, on Christmas Day 1950, removed the Stone of Destiny from the coronation chair in Westminster Abbey and took it back to Scotland, where it remained for four months.

Uproar and outrage followed leading John McAvoy to write a song called The Wee Magic Stane, popularised by Robin Hall and Jimmy McGregor, which begins: ‘The Dean o’ Westminster was a powerful man, he held a’ the strings o’ the State in his hand, but wi’ a’ his great business it flustered him nane, when some rogues ran away wi’ his wee magic stane. Wi’ a too-ra-li-oo-ra-li-oo-ra-li.’
