AN ITEM in a recent Islay letter referring to the standing stone at Ballinaby prompted retired Plockton High School rector Duncan Ferguson to send me one of his poems which was inspired by standing stones throughout the Highlands and Islands.
Duncan’s verse also recalls shinty matches played at Lossit shore near the Cultoon stone circle and Ballinaby on the shortest days of the year during the winter solstice.
The retired rector gleaned these tales of yore during formative years spent in his native Portnahaven.
