There will be thoroughly understandable and widespread relief across Lochaber – and the sporting world further afield – that Fort William Football Club will continue to play in the Highland League next season. Thankfully, a new board of directors has stepped forward and has confirmed that the team will still be competing in Britain’s most northerly senior football league for the foreseeable future.

There had been very serious concern about the future viability of the club for some months following the announcement earlier this year that the board of directors was to stand down en masse at the conclusion of the current football season. Furthermore, there had been fears that Fort William FC would be forced to drop down to the North Caledonian Football League.

There has obviously been a great deal of negotiation and discussion to bring about the new agreement that will keep Fort William FC, a community interest company, in the league it first joined in 1985, following its formation back in 1974.

We applaud the players, directors, committee members and volunteers for this result.
