The news we report this week that the Rockport Hotel in Oban has closed with the loss of five full-time jobs is disappointing, to say the least. It is also somewhat surprising.
Oban has seen a booming tourist sector in recent times, with demand for accommodation soaring and providers reporting record levels of room occupation. Restaurants and bars have also been saying they have enjoyed a very busy season.
That is why it is puzzling that such a well-positioned hospitality sector business – it is right in the heart of the town centre in Tweedale Street – apparently cannot turn a suitable profit.
