Mingulay boat songs and the sands of Vatersay

Macphail's Music

AS PROMISED in last week’s piece, the following is a brief overview of an Outer Hebridean seagoing adventure undertaken last weekend.

We left Dunstaffnage bound for Barra at 3am after playing at a wedding on Loch Lomondside on Saturday night. The weather was fine and on board with me were my two favourite boating companions, Andrew Stevenson and Beastie the dog. We arrived in Castlebay at 8.30 on Sunday morning. Barra is an island that we have had great times on over the years and I still get excited when we arrive. Turning into the bay the scene is very evocative – Kisimul Castle, the Castlebay Hotel, the Bar, the Church, The Craigard Hotel and Ben Heaval over-looking everything.
