The Ultimate Wild Swim

Swimming with killer whales in the wild is a once in a lifetime experience, says Shane Wasik

In terms of wildlife swims, swimming with killer whales has to be the ultimate thrill. For many people, to just catch a glimpse of these iconic cetaceans is a bucket list experience. But like many bucket list experiences, swimming with killer whales doesn’t come easy or cheap. Killer whales (or orca as we prefer) are a highly migratory species, but Norway is a reliable location to spot them. During the arctic winter vast shoals of herring migrate to spawn along Norway’s coastline. The herring are followed by the orca. During the herring migration it’s not only orca that turn up to feed but also humpback and even fin whales, along with gannets and white-tailed sea eagles.

About Outdoor Swimmer

Welcome to the Christmas issue. This month we talk to English Channel record holder Becky Lewis about her seven crossings (and counting!) and to Beth French about her plan to complete the Oceans Seven in one year, despite suffering from ME. Have you ever wanted to swim an Ice Mile? We have expert advice on how to train safely for one of swimming's most extreme challenges. And if you like a bit of trail running with your outdoor swimming, we take an in-depth look at the endurance sport of swimrun. We have inspiring travel features on Italy, Scotland and the French Riviera. And as it's Christmas we have some delicious cake recipes to try! Plus all the usual training advice and sessions, news, interviews, inspirational stories and event listings for 2016.
