Fairy Pools
I was so taken with Ella Foote’s Scottish road trip, as featured in the December 2018 issue of Outdoor Swimmer, that I persuaded my husband and son that they would like to accompany me on a Scottish road trip adventure of our own. We headed off for a week’s adventure during the first week of the Easter holidays. We started just north of Glasgow where we picked up our hired camper van, and travelled to the west coast before heading up and across to Skye. Unfortunately I was not able to stop and swim in every lovely looking stretch of water that we saw, but I managed a dip in the Atlantic, a swim in a loch, and a cold plunge in the same Fairy Pool Ella visited at the opening of her article. We camped very close to the Fairy Pools and we did a reconnaissance outing to the Pools as the sun went down, in order to suss out the best entry points for an early start the next day.
I would like to say a massive thanks to Ella Foote for her inspiration. We had a fantastic trip covering 620 miles in total, the scenery was knock-out and we were blessed with blue skies for most of the week. There are plenty of places still to see and waters still to immerse in, we shall return to Scotland in hopefully the near future.
