I first came across Grange Lido on a cold and blustery November walk with Andrea and Boot over 15 years ago now. We wanted to get a bit of fresh air and go somewhere different other than our more familiar, lofty, Lake District haunts. We were astonished to see the lido at the end of the sweeping prom (we don’t have many seaside lidos up North) – what a location, and what a place it must have been in its heyday. It was sad to look in through the rusty iron gates at the decay within.
Built in 1932, the beautiful Art Deco architecture was evident even in its sorry state. The views across Morecambe Bay and the Arnside peninsula match any in the country for an impressive panorama. This lido is the only seaside lido in the north of England and is a grade II listed building; as such it is an important part of our heritage which should be embraced and protected in the spirit of our recent World Heritage Site status.
