If you are heading to Anglesey this year for adventure or holidays, make sure you have a reusable cup and bottle. Anglesey has recently become the irst county in the UK to be awarded ‘plastic-free’ community status by marine conservation group Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) and the community expect visitors to follow their example.
“We want to protect our little island, so we want our visitors and tourists to avoid single use plastics when they are in Anglesey and it might inspire them to go home and continue to avoid them,” says local activist Sian Sykes. “Do a beach clean while you’re here and dispose of your rubbish in appropriate bins, recycling where possible.” Anglesey was given the status as a result of an 18-month campaign led by Sian. To achieve the SAS recognition, Anglesey had to meet ive objectives set out by the environmental charity. As a result businesses were encouraged to ditch disposable cofee cups and bottles, and schools pledged to cut plastic waste.
