GREEN SPEARS OF GOODNESS
Asparagus — from the Greek word asparagos, meaning shoot or sprout, these green spears of wholesome goodness were used by the ancient Greeks to cure a whole multitude of ailments, including toothache and heart disease. Later, in France it was used as a pre-wedding appetiser, due to its apparent aphrodisiac properties.
Nowadays, though, you are more likely to find crunchy pieces of asparagus in a stir fry or tart, and with a very short spell in season in the UK (from 23rd April until 21st June) now is the time to get your fix.
