PowerTorque  |  Issue 49 October - November 2012

A bumper issue for October with a full review of the latest Freightliner to join the Australian market, the Coronado 114. This model has been a long time coming for the American manufacturer but it now plugs the gap in the specification that once belonged to the Sterling brand. It’s been well thought through and looks as though it’s going to have a rapid rise to popularity.

If you like to read about older vehicles being kept in immaculate condition then the Western Star of Scott Thomas is going to take your breath away. It may have covered 800,000 kms but it looks better than the day it left the production line.

If you want the latest on the European scene we have full coverage on the latest Volvo FH-Series. With the availability of Euro 6 engines, independent front suspension, a dual clutch automated manual transmission and I-See telematics that link to the gearshift, it’s maybe too far for some operators to go in one technology leap. At this stage peak horsepower with the IFS is set at 460 hp and as we all know only too well, what might work in Europe may not necessarily work downunder. Time will tell on that dilemma.

Natural gas is an option the American manufacturers believe will become more popular over the next ten years, but it’s not the solution for everyone. We give you the options and the latest ideas on gas injection.

We also gain a first drive preview of the Hino Pro-Shift automated manual transmission, evaluate the first Chinese Trucks from JAC to head onto the Australian market, and we visit a great Aussie family outside Mackay and find our how Mercedes-Benz fits their bill.

WesTrac has opened its Megasite at Newcastle in NSW. At a cost of over $160 million this is the service centre that sets global standards. Join us and the WesTrac management team for their opening night amongst the celebrities.
